A CUP OF SILENCE: CHIKA’S ’s STORY
A CUP OF SILENCE: CHIKA’S ’s STORY
Chika never thought that something as simple as a drink could change the course of her life.
At 27, she was the pride of her family, hardworking, cheerful, and determined to build a better future.
A factory worker in Abuja, her days started before dawn and ended long after dusk.
The shifts were exhausting, and like many of her colleagues, she found herself constantly battling fatigue.
One evening, a co-worker offered her a “special mix” that promised to keep her awake and strong through the night shift. It was cheap, quick, and effective.
At first, it felt like magic, Chika could work longer hours, earn extra shifts, and send more money home.
But the magic soon turned into chains.
What she thought was just an energy booster was laced with addictive substances. Weeks turned into months, and Chika couldn’t function without it.
She grew irritable, her once radiant smile faded, and her body began to fail her.
Then came the accident.
One foggy morning, Chika collapsed while operating heavy machinery. She survived, but not without deep scars, physically, emotionally, and financially.
Her employers distanced themselves, her friends whispered, and her family could not understand how the strong, vibrant daughter they knew had become so fragile.
Chika’s story is not hers alone. Across Nigeria, countless young men and women are trapped in a silent epidemic, drug abuse in the workplace.
Often disguised as harmless energy boosters, these substances destroy lives, reduce productivity, and leave families broken.
But there is hope.
Through awareness, counselling, and safe spaces for open conversations, lives can be rebuilt.
Chika is now in recovery, slowly learning to live without the crutch that once controlled her.
She dreams of returning to school one day and sharing her story so that others may not fall into the same trap.
At Balm for the Bruised Foundation, we believe no scar is too deep to heal, and no story too broken to be rewritten.
Your Action Point:
If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, don’t stay silent. Silence feeds stigma; conversation sparks healing.
Reach out, speak up, and let’s build a future where no worker has to choose between survival and self-destruction.
